Gay Community News reports that actress Shirley MacLaine has come forth with a plea for celebrities to speak up for civil rights for gay people. Backstage after a performance at a Reno nightclub, MacLaine said gay activists should enlist the help of performers in their struggle. "We owe our acts to gays. We owe much of our music, our dancing, our costumes, plenty of everything to gays," she said. "You've got to come out and bop this thing on the head, hit it as hard as you can, to protect both civil rights and human rights in this country. And performers can be at the head of this drive."
Speaking of which, Patti Smith, punk-rock star, was the major entertainment name at the New York City Gay Pride Rally. Smith arrived about three hours ahead of her scheduled appearance and did this short interview with GCN: GCN; Patti, why are you here? Patti: Some girl said she would pay me five dollars to sing "Gloria." GCN: What's "Gloria?" Patti: It's my big song and she said she'd pay me five dollars. I said okay but I didn't believe her. She called me on it though, so I'm here. GCN: Do you support gay rights? Patti: I stopped by to say hello. GCN: Do you support gay rights? Patti: just stopped by to say hello. GCN: Well... Patti: I got a lot of friends here......
A National Gay Leadership Conference will be held in Denver at the First Unitarian Church at 1400 Lafayette St. on July 29 and 30. Co-sponsored by the National Gay Task Force, the Gay Rights National Lobby, the Metropolitan Community Churches and Dignity, the conference is inviting two representatives from each organization in the country. A London jury has convicted the British newspaper Gay News and its editor Denis Lemon of "blasphemous libel" for publishing a poem that depicted Christ homosexual sex object. The 10-2 verdict was made by a jury of seven men and five women. Britain's anti-blasphemy laws can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Pittsburgh's Gay Life reports "the Navy is adding a new dimension for people who like to let their fingers do the walking: Dial-A-Sailor." The new Norfolk service provides the caller with a dinner guest, a beach companion or someone with whom to enjoy a sporting event.....
Another Gay Life note: "Sexual equality was achieved in Lubock, Texas recently when the local school district voted to equalize the school dress code. Boys may not wear strapless gowns to class and girls may not grow beards, although they may have neatly trimmed moustaches.".
More on the un-shine state, Florida ... In response to the Miami controversy over a ban on discrimination against gay people, the Florida legislature approved bills outlawing samesex marriages and barring homosexuals from adopting children. The resolutions were passed one week before the Dade County referendum. Sen. Curtis Peterson, sponsor of both bills, said the action was intended as a strong message to homosexuals "that we are tired of you and wish you would go back in the closet."....

In the July issue of Hustler Magazine, controversial publisher Larry Flynt editorializes for a need to give full support to the fight for gay rights. According to Flynt, "Hustler's market is basically heterosexual and we do not run articles advocating homosexuality" but "we do condone it simply because we feel that all forms of sexual expression are protected by the First Amend-petitions contain a "Declaration ment. They will be collected and forwarded to the President of the United States, with copies to all members of the Congress and to members of the legislatures of all 50 states...
Regarding the overwhelming black support to repeal gay rights in Dade County, black columnist George Anthony Moore says, "Historically black communities have been more vindictive than their white counterparts about people accused of being gay. The term used in the black community is "sissy", and it is said with hate and contempt. However, the younger generation is becoming a little more tolerant." He also adds, "It worries me that gays may be becoming today's niggers'.".

Associated Press reports that Fanne Foxe, the Argentine-born stripper who sparked the first of many Washington sex scandals through her infamous affair with congressman Rep. Wilbur Mills, D-Ark., has made her movie debut in a low-budget film titled "Let's Perk Up the Bosom." This sounds like a problem for the mayor of Cleveland and his garbage-people to handle Anita Bryant's theatrical agent, Dick Shack, has quit his position with the Miami-based singer because of a book that Bryant has written on her antigay crusade. Shack's wife, a Dade County Commissioner, was responsible for initially introducing equal rights
legislation for gays. Shack said the book, titled "Save Our Children", is "exploiting the recent vicious, anti-human rights campaign that was filled with lies and myths."...
